Running Bond
The classic brick-wall layout: each row offset by half a paver. It is the fastest pattern to lay, hides small dimensional inconsistencies well, and wastes the least material because the only cuts are half-pavers at alternating row ends — and each cut yields two usable halves. Herringbone (90° and 45°)
Pavers laid in an interlocking zigzag. Herringbone is the strongest pattern under load because it locks in both directions, which is why it's the standard recommendation for driveways. The 90° version keeps cuts manageable; the 45° version looks the most dynamic but generates triangular offcuts along every edge — budget a full 15% waste and expect a lot of saw time.
Basketweave
Pairs of rectangular pavers laid in alternating horizontal and vertical sets, creating a woven look. It only works with pavers whose length is exactly twice their width (like 4 × 8 in). Nearly as fast as running bond on square-edged areas, with a traditional character that suits brick especially well.
Stack Bond
Pavers aligned in a plain grid, joints lined up in both directions. Minimal cutting and a crisp modern look, especially with large-format 16- or 24-inch slabs. Its weakness is structural: with no interlock, it should be limited to foot-traffic areas, and precise joint alignment is unforgiving of sloppy laying.
Random / Modular Patterns
Manufacturers sell 3-piece systems (e.g., 6×6, 6×9, 9×9) with laying diagrams that repeat without visible seams. The result looks pleasingly irregular while still being systematic to install. Follow the manufacturer's pattern sheet and order by square footage rather than piece count — our calculator's area output plus 8–10% waste is what your supplier needs.
Three Rules That Apply to Every Pattern
First, always start laying from a fixed straight edge — usually the house — and work outward, checking alignment with string lines every few rows. Second, set your border (soldier course) first if you're using one; it frames the field and hides ragged cut edges. Third, buy all your pavers from one production lot. Color varies between dye lots, and a patio that mixes two lots shows it forever. This is another reason the waste factor matters: it's much better to have a dozen spare pavers than to order a second batch later.
